He was born in Walsall, West Midlands in 1918 to father (Also named) Richard William (1863-1939) and his second wife Florence May Kemp (1884-1972).
Richard married Marjorie Jones in 1941 and they had one son and two daughters. Ann Linden Tivey (1944-1950) Richard Nicholas and Victoria Louise.
