Edwin was firstly enlisted in the reserve unit of the 5th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment but was discharged one month later for bad character and unsatisfactory conduct. He later joined the labour corps of the Northern Labour Unit Sherwood Forresters in 1916. Edwin was the son of Frederick Tivey and Mary Jane Hulse of Melbourne. His brothers Oswald Hulse Tivey and Albert Henry Tivey also served in the armed forces, Albert being killed in action. |

Edwin’s next of kin was stated as May Leale Tivey (Wife) of High Street, Melbourne at attestation but his address in 1917 was given as Blanch Croft, Melbourne. It was also noted that he had one child at the time of his second attestation – Winifred Maud Tivey born 13th March 1913 Melbourne.
