He is the son of John Bailey Tivey (1883-1948) and Mary Emma Jacques (1886-1966).
Ernest married Gladys Eveline Button in 1935 and the couple had 4 children; Michael John (1936-2005), John David (1938), Bryan William (1939-1984) and Judith M (1941).
