Joseph was apprenticed out in 1821 he was described as poor indigent boy, the son of Edward & Sarah Tivey of the parish of Melbourne, Derbyshire. Joseph has been a particularly hard member of the family to trace; his age differs on the census for as much as 9 years but after much consideration and the disscovery of the apprenticeship paper, it is almost certain that Joseph was the son of Edward & Sally. He is transcribed as lots of different surnames in the census (ancestry.com) ~ Tury, Tweey, Tivy but luckily he never changed address between 1841-1881 and it is because of that fact that I have been able to trace him. On the last census in 1881 he gives a more realistic age of 74 which gives his birth as around 1807 not 1816 as was quoted in the other census. His death has also been difficult to find the nearest I have come accross is in 1886 Aston where a Joseph Tiddy died aged 70 but at this point his death was probably reported by a neighbour as his sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis and a lodger he was in the census with were both deceased before Joseph.

Mother Sally died when she was very young, her father Edward did not re-marry whilst the children were young but apprenticed out his sons and had his daugters married as soon after their 16th birthdays as possible.

Sarah married Joseph Elsey, second eldest twin son (brother John) to Edward Elsey and Sarah Whittaker on her sixteenth birthday 28 October 1828.

Nottingham, St Peter

The Parish

St Peter's parish, the smallest of the three parishes of Nottingham, is encompassed by St Mary's and St Nicholas' parishes, and averages about 450 yards in length and 200 in breadth. It extends from Timber Hill, the Poultry and Bottle Lane, to the north bank of the Leen; and is bounded on the east by Sussex Street, Middle Hill, Middle Pavement, and the buildings behind Market Street and Fletchergate; and on the west by Greyfriargate, the Independent Chapel and friends' Meeting House, and the north end of Friar Lane. Its principal streets are Bridlesmithgate, Timber Hill and the Poultry. Its public edifices are the Parish Church and the Assembly Rooms.

The Church

St Peter's Church stands upon the declivity which falls westward from Bridlesmithgate to the foot of Wheelergate, Houndsgate, and the Low Pavement. It is a Gothic structure with a tower at the west end, supporting a spire, and containing a peal of eight bells cast in 1771, and said to be the best attuned and the most melodious of any within many miles. The fabric is supposed to have been built in the early part of the 15th century. It was greatly damaged in the civil wars, when the garrison threw several bombs into it to dislodge a party of loyalists who had taken possession of it. Since then it has been frequently repaired, and in 1789 a mason by the name of Wooton took down and rebuilt four yards of the spire, without the aid of scaffolding. The interior is peculiarly neat and has a good organ, which was purchased by subscription in 1812. A large square window at the east end, which contained a variety of coats of arms in stained glass, was built up in 1720, when an altar piece was placed against it, representing the Last Supper, but which has since been removed to make room for a beautiful painting by Mr Barber of Christ's agony in the garden. Upwards of 700 free seats for the use of the poor were erected in the church a few years ago. In 1831, a new burial ground, containing 16,000 square yards, near the Workhouse in the Broad Marsh, was opened for the use of St Peters Parish. The benefice is a rectory, valued in the King's books at £8 7s 6d. It is in the patronage of the crown, and now in the incumbency of the Rev. Robert White Almond M.A.

Australian family rumours state that Samuel was the Director of a Lace Manufacturing firm in Nottingham but I have yet to find evidence of this. In the 1841 census Samuel is listed as a Lace Maker not a manufacturer. Further more, an 1841& 1848 trade directory of Nottingham does not list Samuel as a Manufactuer. However, there was a Lace manufacturer in the name of John Wild & Co situate Mansfield Road, Nottingham..This could be a relation of Phoebe's and maybe the business was left in a Will to Samuel & Phoebe.........this needs more investigation.

Port & Vessel: 09 Dec 1848, Sydney, NSW 'Bermondsey' They landed on the ship at Eden, Twofold Bay, NSW, proceeded to Menare and took up land at Nimitybelle. According to the diary kept by their son Joseph, "The ship set sail from Deptford on Wednesday 23rd August 1848 at 4.30 in the afternoon"

28/5/1920 #~ word came through yesterday that Mr James Thomas had died that morning at his home at Chatswood. Mr Thomas was a native of Pembrokeshire, Wales, and was 86 years of age. He came to Australia with his parents when quite a boy, and the family arrived on Monaro shortly after, in the days when bullock drays were the the main mode of conveyance. In later years Mr Thomas purchased the "Mona" property, near Bombala, and "Moore Springs" near Bibbenluke, and on the latter property he carried on grazing pursuits until he was compelled by failing health to retire. He lived in Bombala for some time before moving to Chatswood. His death at the great age of 86 years draws the curtain on deeds well done. A widow, two daughters and five sons mourn their loss. Mrs Cooks of this town is a sister, and Mr J M Thomas of Bibbenluke a brother.

Notes for Edwin Tivey:

Edwin served as a Captain in the Boer War, when he was awarded the DSO in 1901. In World War I as a BrigadieGeneral he commanded an Australian brigade on the Western Front. He was awarded the CB in 1917 and the CMG in 1919. He retired with the rank of Major-General in 1928. Tivey Parade and Tivey Street in Melbourne suburbs are named after him.

Edwin was educated at All Saints Grammar School, St Kilda, and at Wesley College, Melbourne, where he rowed bow in the second crew of 1882. 'No scholastic genius', he eschewed university to return to Inglewood as an accountant. He was commissioned lieutenant in the Inglewood detachment of the Victorian Rangers in 1889 and promoted captain in 1891. Townsfolk elected him to the Inglewood Borough Council on which he served for five years from 1894. In 1899 he became a founder and first president of the local branch of the Australian Natives' Association.

In 1903 Tivey became a member of the Melbourne Stock Exchange. On 26 September 1906 he married Annie Bird Robb (d.1921) at the Presbyterian Church, Toorak. A captain in the new 9th Light Horse Regiment of the Victorian militia, in 1906 Tivey was appointed brigade major in the Victorian 3rd Light Horse Brigade and in 1911 as lieutenant-colonel became its commander. He received the Volunteer Officer's Decoration in 1910.

By the commencement of World War I Tivey was a successful stockbroker and temporary colonel commanding the Victorian 5th L.H.B. He was promoted colonel in January 1915 and was commandant of the officers' school at Broadmeadows. 'Of neat build, middle height, crisp appearance, he looks every inch a soldier', observed Melbourne Punch.

In July Tivey was appointed commander of the Australian Imperial Force's 8th Infantry Brigade which he personally helped to recruit. He quickly endeared himself to men of all ranks with his sincerity and his concern for their interests. In December the brigade disembarked in Egypt where it held a sector of the Suez Canal defences. Its men were soon dubbed 'chocolate soldiers' because, to relieve Moascar, they travelled by train from Tel-el-Kebir while supporting troops marched for two days through heat and sand. Thenceforth the brigade was known as 'Tivey's Chocs'.

Tivey was appointed temporary brigadier general in February 1916 and in June his brigade left with the Australian 5th Division for France. It went into action at the battle of Fromelles and continued to fight on the Western Front until the war's end. In December 1916 Tivey was wounded in action but remained on duty. For brief periods in 1917 and 1918 he temporarily commanded the 5th Division when Major General (Sir) Talbot Hobbs was absent. Tivey was again wounded at Westhoek Ridge, Belgium, in October 1917 and was gassed in May 1918. In the great allied offensive of 8 August 1918 his brigade captured 831 prisoners and 85 machine-guns. During the war he was mentioned in dispatches six times; he was appointed C.B. in 1917 and C.M.G. in January 1919.

From late November 1918 to May 1919 Tivey was temporary major general, again temporarily commanding the 5th Division. In July 1919 he embarked for Australia where, in the reserve of officers, Australian Military Forces, he was promoted major general in June 1920. In 1921-26 he commanded the 2nd Cavalry Division of the Citizen Military Forces. Governor-General Lord Forster undervalued Tivey in 1925 by describing him as 'a nice little man who fancies himself a bit'. Having resumed trading as a respected and well-known member of the Melbourne Stock Exchange, from 1920 Tivey lived in a small mansion, Nauroy, Kooyong Road, Toorak, and worshipped at nearby St John's Anglican Church. He was an honorary colonel in the Victorian mounted rifles from 1928 and, from 1932, in the Victorian 32nd Battalion. On his eightieth birthday he was described as a 'silver haired dapper sharebroker [who] retains his soldierly bearing' and 'attends his office every day'.

Tivey died at his Toorak home on 19 May 1947 and was buried with full military honours by the bishop of Geelong in Brighton cemetery, Melbourne. His estate was sworn for probate at £75,303, the principal beneficiary being his daughter Violet. His son Major Edwin Peter Tivey had died as an Italian prisoner of war in 1943.

Maurice Myles Witts Was born on the 23/ 2/1877 The second youngest of 11 brothers and 2 sisters. He went to school locally, and finished his education at The Sydney Grammar School as a boarder.

After this he held the position of overseer of the Indian Labourers with the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in Fegi for 14 months, and was held in high regard until he resigned. Later he served with the 2nd. N.P. Mounted Rifles in the war in South Africa against the Boers. He was discharged with the rank of Quarter Master Sergeant in about June 1902. It was after this that he headed off to the New Hebrides to join his cousin Theo Thomas on a coconut plantation- and not long after started up in his own right, naming the plantation "Lelek". It was during this period That he married Mabel, and there first child Helen was born at the local mission station at Santo 23 /10/1907. He left the New Hebrides at the end of 1911 to return to Australia and reunite with Mabel- Who had returned some time before due to Malaria, and was living with her parents- Lesley and Kate Herring. who had a orchard at Beecroft NSW.

From Legion of Frontiersmen (New Zealand) Command ~ Maurice Myles Witts was born in Bombala, NSW in 1877 and died in Moss Vale, NSW in 1966. During 1899-1900 he worked for the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. in Fiji. In 1900 he enlisted in the Mounted Rifles and fought in the Boer War, after which he was discharged as a Sergeant in 1902. In 1904 he moved to Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides where he established a coconut plantation at Hog Harbour. In 1904 he married Mabel Herring (born Sydney, 1877) on Santo. The Witts returned to Australia about 1913.

Eric James- Husband of Nancy Mabel Witts- was one of the very early families to settle in the Colony of NSW. They have this Month (May 1989) had their Bi- Centennial Family Re union Held over 3 days at Camden NSW. Many of the old Hassall; graves can be found at Cobbity NSW.. Rev Hassall married Rev Samuel Marsden’s daughter, She started the first Sunday school in NSW. He was known as "The Galloping Parson" whose parish was so large that he had to gallop to get to different destinations for the church services! As an example, it was from the parish of Cobbity that he would take service at Sutton Forest NSW. Many other clergy and missionaries in following generations have kept the Hassall name linked with the church. One of Eric’s aunts was a missionary in India for many years.
