1. Francis3 Tivey (Group 152 Dad, Group All1) was born 10 Dec 1810 in Melbourne, Derbyshire, and died 07 Oct 1883 in Union Infirmary, Greenwich, Kent. He married Martha Hancock 27 Nov 1833 in Pembrokeshire, Wales. She was born Abt. 1811 in Pembroke Docks, S Wales, and died 03 Jan 1885 in Greenwich, Kent.
Notes for Francis Tivey:
Francis Tivey was born in Melbourne Derbyshire about 1810 and his tree can bee seen in Group 15 of L F Tivey's group. Since the publication of LF Tivey's first book in 1973, Examination Papers from 1841 and other papers suggest that he was the son of William Tivey 1790 and Ann Salsbury of Group 4 and furthermore was the grandson of William Tivey and Sarah Wade of Group F.
Francis Tivey enlisted first with the 95th Regiment of Foot in 1827, before transferring to the Royal Marines in 1829. . While with the 95th Foot, he served with the Depot troops in Portsmouth/Gosport, although the main body of the regiment was stationed in Malta.
After transferring to the Royal Marines, he served on the 18-gun sloop HMS Columbine in the West Indies from 1830 to 1834. He had a break of about six months, when he married in Pembroke, and his son William Francis Tivey may have been born about November 1835, apparently in the parish of Pater in Pembroke .
In September 1835 Francis Tivey signed up in Portsmouth for HMS Harrier, which took him to South America in 1835-1839, a long stint away from home. This ship crossed to the Caribbean and then sailed south down the Atlantic coast of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, rounded Cape Horn, and then up the Pacific coast of Chile and Peru, returning by a similar route.
After another break (eight months), in March 1840 he signed up for HMS Britannia, which was based in Malta with the eastern Mediterranean fleet. The ship's log is missing for some of this period, but it is possible to construct her whereabouts from the shipping reports in the Times. It seems she was not actively involved in engagements taking place off the Syrian coast at that time, but served mainly as a support vessel at Malta.
There is a note in Britannia's muster books regarding an allotment of Francis Tivey's pay (authorised 1 April 1840). This indicates that part of his wages were to be paid directly to a dependant in England (usually wife or parent). Unfortunately the allotment registers for this ship for 1840 do not survive.
In July 1841 Francis Tivey was taken ill in Malta and admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital there. HMS Britannia left for Corfu without him, and a few weeks later he got a passage home on HMS Dido, arriving back in Portsmouth on 18 August 1841.
Two months later he joined HMS St Vincent, the flagship in Portsmouth Harbour. This was no doubt less arduous than being at sea and would have allowed him to spend time with his family. Some excitement was occasioned when this ship joined the squadron that escorted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's Royal Yacht on a trip to Belgium in September 1843. Unfortunately the musters for the St Vincent do not survive for this period, so we cannot be sure Francis Tivey was on board at the time. His discharge papers state that he did two stints on this ship, with a seven-month break between, and that he finally left her on 23 Sep 1843. At that date she was moored in Cork, Ireland.
There has been no further information on him until 10 May 1844, when he was admitted from the Portsmouth HQ to the Haslar Hospital in Gosport. After six weeks in hospital he was deemed "unserviceable" and was discharged from the Royal Marines on 23 June 1844. The Portsmouth Discharge Book gives his age then as 36 years 2 months. This cannot be relied upon 100% but may help pinpoint his birth date.
There are no records of a formal re-enlistment at either Portsmouth or Woolwich. There was extensive recruiting of troops at this period, both for the Crimea and for India, but it is in doubt whether he would have re-entered active service at this stage, especially given his previous ill-health. It may be that he was instead employed informally on light duties in the Woolwich/Greenwich area.

HMS Stonehenge was an S class submarine of the Royal Navy, and part of the Third Group built of that class. She was built by Cammell Laird and launched on March 23, 1943.
She served in the Pacific, where she sank the Japanese merchant vessel Koryo Maru No.2 and the Japanese auxiliary minelayer Choko Maru. She left Trincomalee to patrol in the northern part of the Malacca Straits on February 25, 1944 She was reported missing after failing to arrive at Ceylon on March 20 as expected. It is not known for sure what caused her sinking, but a mine was considered to be the most likely explanation
. Letter from office of the Admiral (Submarines), HMS Dolphin, Gosport, dated 11 January 1946. An extract says:-
HMS Stonehenge sailed from Trincomalee, Ceylon on 25 February 1944 for a patrol in the Malacca Straits area. She was due to return to her base on 20 March but did not do so and nothing further has been heard of her; the enemy had no knowledge of her loss. The most likely explanation is that she struck a mine. There were no survivors.
An enclosure to the above giving a summary of the war service:-
HM Submarine Stonehenge was built at Messrs. Cammell Lairds Ltd. Liverpool, and was accepted for service on 11 June 1943, under the command of Lieutenant Verschoyle-Campbell, DSC. RN.
After one patrol in the North Sea in September 1943, this submarine left the United Kingdom for service in the Far East and was stationed at Trincomalee with the Fourth Submarine Flotilla, arriving at Colombo on 16 January 1944.
HM Submarine Stonehenge sailed from Trincomalee for her first war patrol in the East on 1 February 1944.
On 5 February, she sank a small Japanese transport by gunfire with about 80 Japanese troops on board, and after various other operations off the north of Sumatra, during which time she was unsuccessfully attacked by Japanese anti-submarine vessels, she torpedoed, and finally sank, a large Japanese auxiliary warship of some 7,000 tons off Penang on 12 February 1944.
HM Submarine Stonehenge returned to Trincomalee on 18 February and, after a week's rest, sailed again on 25 February for patrol in the same area. Nothing further was heard of this very fine submarine and her crew, neither has it been possible to establish either the date or cause of her loss.
Another summary signed by a B. BOGART states:-
"(Stonehenge) did her first patrol early in 1944 from Trincomalee to Malacca Straits. This patrol was carried out with good determination and resulted in the sinking of a Japanese auxiliary, the "Choko Maru" of 7,000 tons. A successful gun action was carried out on a smaller vessel and rather more than the usual excitement was had with Japanese A/S vessels.
"Stonehenge left Trincomalee on February 25 1944 for her second patrol with orders to patrol off Achin Head, and permission to investigate the Nicobars. She was never heard of again and post-war interrogation of the Japanese showed that they had no knowledge of a submarine being either attacked or sunk about that time or in that area. There are two possible explanations:-
• A submarine accident - always a possibility in a profession where the dangers of the sea are nearly as big a problem as the violence of the enemy.
• Mines - the only minefield was close off Port Blair, and Stonehenge would only have hit it if she had actually tried to enter.
